Today the Treasury Department published the names of individuals who renounced their U.S. citizenship or terminated their long-term U.S. residency (“expatriated”) during the second quarter of 2026.
There were 1,781 names included for the second quarter. For the first quarter there were 1,462 names. Thus, for the first two quarters of this year, there have been 3,243 names published. That is almost as many names as were published for all of 2023.
I usually focus on the 8-quarter moving average to view the trend. The 8-quarter moving average was as low as 750 names in 2022, but it now has moved up to about 1,360, an 80% increase over the span of 4 years. The quarterly average is now just about as high as the peak of expatriations back in 2016 and 2017.
